[Moderator (Sealeopard): Moved topic from 'Scripts' to 'General' forum due to lack of script in body]

[Moderator (Sealeopard): Closed topic on request from initial poster]

Some of you may remember, I think it was just shortly after Kixtart 2001 was released, when Ruud gave an interview with Comptrends Inc. He fielded questions about Kixtart Scripting in general, and his future plans and directions for Kixtart. He even answered questions about his work and personal life. The interview was a wonderful idea at the time and a really great read.

Well, the moderators of Kixtart.org are pleased to announce that Ruud has agreed to another round of questioning - this time with a twist. Instead of soliciting questions from one or two specific members of the community, we want to hear from ALL the members of Kixtart.org !

Whats your hottest Kixtart question ?

Thats right! Have a question you've always wanted to ask ? Then here's your chance to ask it. Feel free to post your questions to Ruud in this thread. In a week or two, the moderators will be compiling the best of your questions and sending them off. And although Ruud admits to not having a whole lot of free time lately, he will do his best to answer as many of them as possible.

So, if you haven't done so already, I highly recommend you read the previous interview here ...

Interview with Ruud

Have any follow-up questions ? (I know I do). Want to know more about upcoming releases of Kixtart ? How about that new tokenized engine, whats that all about ? Will there be a Kixtart Version 5.0 ? I'm sure there are many, many questions out there - post your questions now.

-Shawn

hmmm, good question. wouldn't mind getting Ruud's take on Canadian beer while we're at it ... but heres a question I have always wanted to ask Ruud:

In terms of the evil "$vars in strings" issue, and the NoVarsInStrings option, was wondering if specifying environment variables inside quotes is equally evil. In fact, does Kixtart use the same ugly internal code to expand those as well.

there is nothing wrong with german beer... except for the hefeweisens that have the consistency of pudding [Confused]

I'd like a console version of kix the outputs to a GUI window instead of a 'dos' window... or a gui wrapper for the console. nothing as fancy as kixforms

Will kix's std-out ever be changed so that things like this

CGI in KiX?

and this

Using Kix as a CGI script

can work with out having to send things via a text file/batch commands? This would open up a whole new world for kix scripts... ASP like web pages.

As it has been suggested many times before, what does ruud think about passing parameters by reference. Is it even a possiblity?

how he has time to develop kixtart when he has fulltime job?
has he ever thought about making kixtart open source in case he is not able to continue developing it?

I like Jooel's questions. Where does Ruud see the future of kixtart? How does he see himself & it developing over the next 5 years? What niche does he see kixtart filling?

We have the beta & suggestions forums for asking for specific modifications to kixtart & Ruud does participate so if there is an interview, I would like to go beyond these details & see more general or philosophical questions addressed.

Jack, I agree. Don't want to turn this into a feature slam fest, but certainly we can ask about a few higly sought-after features. But Jack, your on a roll, don't stop now.

That's what is so good about them! 'You can't have any pudding until you eat your meat!'

Back to topic: Echoing other's sentiments, I too would like Ruud to discuss the future of kixtart and where he sees it fitting in among other competing technologies. For me, it's not necessary for him to elaborate on every enhancement he has in mind but it would be great if he would hit us with some of the bigger more time-consuming updates/upgrades and how long he thinks they'll take to implement.

ja, a couple of other things I would like to ask Ruud:

1) In the long-term, will you be growing Kixtart into a better and better LOGIN scripting language, or GENERAL PURPOSE scripting language.

2) Along the same lines, and in terms of broad major enhancement, are REGULAR EXPRESSIONS and CLASSES on the hit list.

I am interested in increased functionality/features but not at the expense of code bloat.

Question: Architecturally, would it be possible to have a lean, mean KiXtart core binary for basic logon script processing and be able to add KiXmodules for enhanced functionality? That way we could choose our level of functionality and overhead.

Your first question Shawn for me really boils down to:

-Is your priority in the ongoing developing of kixtart to keep it as small and streamlined as possible i.e. logon scripting, or to continue adding features like regular expressions which will make it a more powerful scripting language?

-Either answer has drawbacks, so how do you plan on walking that tightrope between power and portability?

hmmm ja, but assuming that kix32.exe doubled in size, say to 480kb, would you still consider it bloated (I know bloat is a relative thing, kinda like some of my relatives and in-laws ) [Wink]

This would be a good question for Ruud. Is code bloat a major concern of yours, or is it more to do with the investment of your time.

Actually, here is another kind of curve-ball question for Ruud, are there any features that you will definitetly NOT be implementing in Kixtart - EVER !

If so, we can stop asking and hoping for them, and move on [Wink]

Considering I live in a WAN environment with 40,000 users spread across the globe. I would like to maintain a SMALL core program ~200K or smaller that would enable me to handle typical logon script functionality. I could then manage other pieces of code (RegEx engine, Hashes, or whatever) separately. This way the slow WAN link could be managed better when changes/upgrades occur.

Since I stage all the KiXtart binaries and code locally on my clients already, the download time is nil. But I would wince if I had to upgrade thousands of computers when the size of a single KiXtart binary doubles in size.

Well look at it this way, how many times have you MS patched your workstations from the login script (esp. lately) and how big were those patches ? But we all appreciate that really slow connections present a problem. Isn't there an old saying: nothing + nothing still nothing.

Although it may not be possible to keep the size of KiXtart small, I think that the ability to have good COM support increases the functionality of KiXtart immensely.

We have a Regular Expression Engine via VBscipt COM, Dictionary Objects (HASHes) via VBscript COM, ADO, CDO, ADSI, and more. We need to be careful asking Ruud to include items to which we already have access.

But there may some functions that would be better to be included in KiXtart if getting the COMable stuff installed on ALL clients is difficult or extremely bloated itself.

The API stuff that is not COMable is what is needed to be added such as LsaLookupSids & LsaLookupNames.
