Has anyone use kixtart on windows server 2003???
If so was it successful, and was there any configuration changes that you had to make that were different than Windows 2000 Server???

kixtart does not need any configuration.

You will need to be running KiXtart 4.21 or better to be detected properly using the @PRODUCTTYPE macro..

What about using the 2K3 AD [Confused]
I heard there are some differences between 2K AD and 2K3 AD.

if w2k AD is a AD-baby, w2k3 AD is already a teenager.

but I don't understand.
what does differences in AD affect to kix?

Getting info from 2K3 AD using script written to get info out of 2K AD.

Can the 2K3 AD be spoken to in the same way as the 2K AD [Confused]

I'll be installing 2K3 tomorrow for testing, just a little curios about how to use its AD. Should be basically the same as 2K I think just a few enhancements.

ok.
now I understand.
you are talking about scripts, not about kix itself.

well, the AD's should be "compatible" as the most changes have happened under the hood.
anyway, you will see some more once you get to insall one server.

Got interested because we had a customer trying to run Exchange 2K on a 2K3 server. They had some trouble getting Exchange to work. Called MS and they said that because of AD differences Exchange 2K is not supported on a Windows 2003 server. Sure there are some workarounds to get it working but this is not supported by MS.

It crossed my mind that maybe because of the differences in AD scripts need to be changed also. Anyway, going to have some fun tomorrow (I hope [Big Grin] )

I wonder who was that girlie from microsoft helpdesk that answered you?

that was an easy answer from their list and could have been also:
"there is bug in exchange 2000 and it denies to work with anything else than w2k."

you would have bought that too, wouldn't you [Wink]

they have never had a real good explanation of exchange incompability and I don't think they need to.
they said already about an year ago that exchange 2k on w2k3 will not happen.

btw, exchange 5.5 should work just fine on w2k and w2k3 [Big Grin]

I think it's just for making money.

Q:
If there is a workaround why not build it into Exchange service pack [Confused]

A:
If a customer buys a new Exchange server MS will make some more money.

Just like Bill isn't loaded already [Eek!]

Exchange 2K3 isn't even out yet so how can we sell a 2K3 solution to our customers.

Microcrap would be better. Sorry just a little pissed of at MS now.

the exchange 2k3 is the reason why we don't have AD at all in our net [Big Grin]
until it comes and w2k3 has an sp1 we are not going to upgrade [Razz]

Well, had an emergency today and was at the office for several hours (double overtime for it's a Sunday [Cool] ). Spoke to my CEO a little while on the phone waiting on a server to boot up. He wants to upgrade from NT4 to W2K or W2K3 ASAP. We basically agreed that it will be W2K and he promised me lots of new hardware if needed [Razz] .
We'll wait and see what W2K3 does for some time before thinking of an upgrade.
Upgrade to W2K will be done this year.

To bad for W2K3 but it has to prove itself before being used.

ceo wants to upgrade...
yep, w2k does not have so much lacks to w2k3 for small environments.
I think the best changes are in the AD which has improved quite a bit.
specially, it should help on large corps with lots of distant networks and some wan links...

so, you have CEO who makes those decisions.
we have our staff manager [Big Grin]

The benefits of 2K3 over 2K would be lost on a small network.

Our CEO just gave his ideas about it.
Don't know who you mean with staff manager but if it's the IT manager then that would be me at our company.

It's not a big network.
-2 location (HQ Rotterdam, Amsterdam)
-140 workstations (2K).
-20 servers (NT4 domain two 2k stand alone servers).
All main apps at HQ. Connected to Amsterdam with leased line.

There are plans to expand with two or three new stores and sub offices within the next 3 years.

Biggest advantage besides the AD upgrades (both schema and admin tools - Group Policy Management Console etc) are Volume Shadow Copy and the File Replication Service I guess...

And of course the support timelines. W2K support will end before WinXP support. Thus, you might rather upgrade to WinXP, especially if you get tons of new hardware, anyway.

Has anyone else had problems copying files to a W2K3 Server?
I'm trying to overwrite the files in a share on W2K3 Standard Edition using Kix2001 ver 4.21.
I reset the default share and NTFS permissions.
I still receive access denied from Kix.
When running MS Copy from the cmd line I get prompted to overwrite, but I can overwrite or use the overwrite switch.
Thanks.
