Hi I am somewhat new to KixTart, was forced into learning it at work. The person who created our logon scripts separated from the military and no one else knew how they worked. I was automatically made the scripting Guru..
With all that being said, Is there a way to run a script as the administrator? Main goal being to load patches and servicepacks, without having the administrator, or someone in the admin group having to be logged on?

Thanks in advance for the help and nice meeting everyone

Please read this link in our handy-dandy "KiXtart FAQ & How To's" forum: Installing an Application as an Admin

You work for the military and was forced into learning Kixtart were you ? That must not have been pretty [Wink]

Yes, we use the SU service to run as local admin on the workstation (from the login script) ... do you have the SUSS service installed on your workstatations ? Runs something like this:

SETL "SU_PASSWORD=Password"

CD "C:\SU"

SHELL 'SU.EXE Administrator "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CMD.EXE /C C:\INSTALL.BAT"'

Something like that anyways ... I was forced to learn Kixtart too. They tied me to a stick and glued my eyes open and made me recite the KIXTART.CHM ...

Yeah, that was done to me too. The tied to a stick part anyway. Noone else knows of the KixTart.chm, or I am sure they would have made me do that too. I have gotten patches and even pushed ServicePack 3 to 2000 machines and Servicepack 1a to XP machines...but it wasn't pretty!! Thanks for the info on the SU Service. It will come in handy in a couple of months, when I get back to my base.

Hmmm... using SU with clear text paswords in the logon script could get you a court marshall! Look into more secure methods such as an admin script with task scheduler.

create a script and schelude it. that's about it [Big Grin]

admin script basically is some script that is to be launched as admin.
you can launch a script that scheludes what ever you want on any or all machines you want and they will be ran as system (under local system account) on each machine.

ja, I would go for the fancy-schmancy JT task scheduler thingy do-hicky too - if your worried about plain-text passwords... by the way, the guy that used to do your Kixtart scripts ... has anyone heard from him since his unusual disappearance ?

John: As you are new to KiXtart but in the military, you're most likely aware of initiation traditions. The KiXtart BBS initiation tradition is to have newbies read the complete KiXtart FAQ Forum [Wink]

It will most likely answer all your imminent questions, and later on you can also use the KiXtart BBS Search to retrieve answers before posting.

yep.
that is his way making sure you don't get answers on silver platter and perhaps you will at some point stop calling him as you have learned on your own...
that is the normal way, isn't it [Wink]

hehee, plus now you are a member of KORG with all the right and priviledges of such, like having a bunch of fellow kixters to bounce ideas off.

It would have been nice of him to SHOW something to me though. He just up and left, disobeying the boss, and not showing anyone the scripts.

You can always show us the scripts and we might be able to make sense of them. However, if the scripts are written according to MIL-SPEC, then it might be hopeless spaghetti-code anyway [Wink]
