Saturday the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge will celebrate its sixth annual Buffalo Day.

Activities will begin at the Prairie Learning Center at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. This event honors the large animals that once roamed our prairies. Area residents are invited to bring friends and family to view the herd of more than 38 buffalo and 19 elk. The first 500 visitors will receive a free buffalo nickel.

Activities will include arts and crafts, demonstrations of pottery making, flint knapping, hide scraping, hikes, storytelling, bus tours, and guest presentations. Native American flute music will entertain all ages. The Newton Jaycees will sell buffalo burgers and hot dogs. A buffalo-chip throwing contest will complete the day's activities.

The judging of the buffalo photo contest will be held at noon.
