Jlo..I had succeded with rehearsals but havent tested yet in red code or different disk.

Does u fellas use any database agent?...and succeded recovering?

Well... ARCServe 2000 has been pissing me off for years. The Raima db keeps getting corrupted.

Next week I migrate to BrightStor 9. This time will set it up to use SQL. Time will tell if it is any better.

A little bit old, but an article for those new to the BACKUP scene.

Scheduling, Barcoding, Offsite Tape Tracking, Fiber Attached SAN are a few things that NTBACKUP either can not do, or has trouble doing in a large enterprise. We currently backup approximately 10 Terabytes a week just in our California region alone. Sorry, but NTBACKUP just does not cut it.

the writer of that has some idea but seems not to know what he is talking about.

"The NT backup program cannot back up open files."
even though it's hidden option, it can.

Been running NTBackup for a while on my servers, but I don't trust it a single bit. I found that some tapes weren't readable at all, even though the backup operation was successful. NTBackup also cannot retension tapes (even though Seagate has a command-line utility for it that might do the trick though).

Veritas licensing isn't cheap though [Frown]

The other thing is that in the case of SQL Server, you do not want to backup the MDF, and NDF files using Veritas, Arcserve, NTBackup anyway. SQL Server has it's own version that works just fine.

Yeah, 1999 is pretty old! A lot has changed since then, both with the built-in and commercial software.

NTBackup in WIn2k is nothing more than Veritas CrippleWare, meant to entice you to buy the full featured version.

I do not use the SQL Agent from CA, choosing instead to have all my SQL servers do their own backup to a very large drive on the box running ARCServe. ARCServe in turn just backs up the large local drive. The benefit is that I can accurately schedule the SQL backups as often as I want and not reliant on the tape schedule which depends on all the jobs that preceed it.

It also gives me 'belt and suspenders' security with multiple copies of the backup, both on the large local drive and on tape. This is also the suggested methodology for the built-in backup proggy.

Tape retension is hardly stupid, but quite essential, especielly on certain types on drives (like Travan for example) [Wink]

And yes, even though the backup was verified, the tapes were unreadable/unrecognized...

1999 is not old in our business. We have project data that often needs recovery. We run a year cycle on normal file/print data, but project data has no time limit. Legal and Business issues dictate that this data be kept available indefinitely. I would think that some data even from Banking or Financial institutes might be required to be "available" for periods up to 7 to 10 years depending on the data.

There are also Databases that can not be shut down as they are 24/7 supported. Hardware snapshot technology is required. You can't take down a terabyte database server and wait for any backup software to back it up as it would be down for probably 2 to 3 days using todays tape technology.

Bottom line I guess is that you use what is best for your Company and your needs and with what budget you have.

afaik, it definitely is not stand-alone and thus not can't be counted as software.
